Abstract

This paper investigates and optimizes the tilt-up system, commonly employed for the maintenance of telecommunication and wind turbine towers. Recognizing the inherent safety challenges and high costs associated with crane-based operations in challenging terrain, the tilt-up system emerges as a promising alternative. This research focuses on optimizing the tilt-up system specifically for a 12-meter lattice tower. The geometry of the tilt-up system significantly influences the forces exerted on the cables and the tower structure itself. By formulating the governing equations of the system and incorporating design constraints and practical considerations, the problem is framed as a nonlinear optimization problem. The solution to this optimization problem yields the optimal length of the gin pole and the optimal cable diameter. After determining the optimal values and considering practical constraints, the tower is modeled at tilt angles of 0, 30, and 60 degrees. The resistance of the member sections is subsequently checked. Notably, the member sections are designed based on the forces experienced in the standing position, eliminating the need to consider the weight of the tower members within the tilt-up system optimization problem. The findings of this research can serve as a valuable foundation for the scientific and practical design and optimization of similar systems in future endeavors.
