Abstract

Foodborne pathogens present significant global health challenges, resulting in economic losses and public health concerns. This review explores the integration of peanut shell-derived materials into active packaging systems to combat these pathogens, emphasizing sustainable and environmentally friendly film manufacturing methods. The review methodology included a comprehensive literature search in databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed, using keywords related to peanut shells, antimicrobial properties, and food safety. The findings indicate that peanut shells possess potent antimicrobial properties due to their high content of phenolic and other bioactive compounds. Different preparation methods, such as hydro-extraction and carbonization, effectively enhance the performance of peanut shell derivatives in active packaging. This study demonstrates the ability of peanut shell derivatives to inhibit common foodborne pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella species, thereby extending the shelf life of perishable foods. Peanut shell-based active packaging systems represent a sustainable alternative to traditional chemical preservatives that aligns with consumer demand for natural food safety solutions. Overall, this study highlights the importance of utilizing agricultural waste in innovative food safety strategies while promoting environmental sustainability.
