Abstract

Background: The host physiological response to parasitic infections, especially in birds, involves a complex set of physiological reactions originating from the immune, endocrine, and nervous systems. Methods: In this study, some articles and research related to the relationship between parasitic infections in animals and disorders occurring in the HPA neurohormonal axis and the development of neurological problems were reviewed. Results: Findings on the relationship were summarized, indicating a mutual influence between these two conditions. One of the most important of these pathways is the hypothalamicpituitary- adrenal (HPA) axis, which is activated in the face of parasite-induced stress and increases the secretion of glucocorticoids such as cortisol or corticosterone. These hormones provide conditions for the body to fight infection more effectively by temporarily inhibiting some immune processes and stimulating inflammatory responses. However, persistent activation of this axis may cause chronic suppression of the immune system and increased susceptibility to other harmfuls microorganisms and pathogens. Conclusion: Activation of the HPA axis by cytokines through the release of glucocorticoids may play an important role in the inhibition and shaping of immune responses. In other words, cytokine-HPA interactions represent a fundamental consideration in the maintenance of homeostasis and the development of disease during viral infection. Although there are studies that focus on the bidirectional relationship between the immune system and the HPA axis during viral infection, others have focused on the immunomodulatory effects of glucocorticoids during viral infection. Overall, the importance of the axis in the regulation of body homeostasis is considerable.
