Abstract

An agricultural landscape represents cultivated land, crops, roads, boundaries, channels, and forest belts as a mosaic of landscape spots. These ecosystems are changing due to human activities, climate change, and natural processes. One of the disadvantages of small-scale agricultural systems is the cultivation of annual crops and traditional agricultural practices, which often conflict with the environment. Economic valuing of ecosystem services enables stakeholders and decision-makers to manage the sustainability of natural resources. Some studies have evaluated ecosystem services in Iran\\\\\\\'s agricultural ecosystems, but no report values the services at the agricultural landscape level. Therefore, this study was conducted for the first time in an agricultural landscape to calculate the economic value of ecosystem services in wheat, canola, barley, and triticale patches. In this study, we valued the supporting, regulating, provisioning, and cultural services in the patches of Dasht-e-Naz Agricultural Company of Sari (Mazandaran province, Iran) as an agricultural landscape based on the CICIES framework. This study valued several ecosystem services by different indices, including carbon sequestration, earthworm abundance, organic matter, oxygen production, grain yield, fodder and straw, pollination, and agrotourism as a cultural service. For this purpose, we used market price, carbon tax, estimation of economic loss, and contingent valuation. The total economic value of all ecosystem services in the agricultural landscape was estimated at $13,708.33/ha. The highest and lowest economic value of ecosystem services were obtained from canola and triticale patches, respectively. Also, the highest economic value of supporting services was obtained from canola patches, equal to $812.76/ha, and the lowest was calculated from triticale patches with $623.57/ha. Based on the results of cultural services, the average willingness to pay was $1.85 per visit. So, the total cultural value of this agricultural landscape was estimated at $2883.36 per year. The highest economic value of ecosystem services in the agricultural landscape was obtained from canola patches with $3955.41/ha, and the lowest value from triticale patches with $2697.82/ha. The results of this study emphasized the importance of the economic valuation of different ecosystem services for the sustainable management of agricultural landscapes. The applied valuation methods provide a replicable framework for prioritizing ecosystem services in similar landscapes, supporting sustainable land-use decisions.
