Abstract
The Kopeh-Dagh sedimentary basin is located in the north and northeast of Iran. The Sarcheshmeh Formation is one of the most important Lower Cretaceous formations in the eastern part of this basin due to its rich fossil content and indicative lithology. The thickness of this Formation in the Muzdoran Pass section is 164 meters and is mainly composed of shale, marl, and limestone interbeds. Its lower boundary with the Tirgan Formation and upper boundary with the Sanganeh Formation is continuous and conformable. In this study, by systematic sampling of 95 samples and microscopic studies, 13 genera and 14 species of foraminifera, 2 genera and 2 species of Ammonites and 1 genus of echinodermata were identified. Based on the composition of index species such as Simplorbitolina sp. and Orbitolina discoidea, the age of the Sarcheshmeh Formation in the Muzdoran Pass section was determined to be Aptian, which is similar with the age of the type section in the east of kopeh-dagh sedimentary basin.
