Abstract

Enhancement degree of understanding the behavior of electroactive polymers compels us to propose a comprehensive electro-chemo-mechanical modeling in hopes of predicting the behavior of astonishing conducting polymer actuators. Here in this paper a suitable nonlinear dynamic model for the fast trilayer bending actuators will be mooted with the aid of the previously proposed distributed RC circuit for modeling electrical admittance for polypyrrole (PPy) polymers. Taking into account the von Kármán strains, based on the Hamilton\\\'s principle for the Timoshenko beam theory the equations of motion are derived. The generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) method along with the Newmark formulation, which are used to transform the PDEs into discrete nonlinear algebraic equations, with the assistance of the Newton-Raphson method to linearize the system of nonlinear algebraic equations are adopted to solve the equations. The results are in good agreement with empirical investigation. It has been shown that considering geometric nonlinearity in modeling the dynamic behavior of these actuators has a noticeable effect on the beam deflection. This model, in addition, has the capability of simulating the dynamic blocking force of trilayer electroactive actuators.
