Abstract

Effect of a 42 day, 5% dietary garlic supplement on rat (6) blood oxidative stress biomarkers and biochemistry is reported. Results were compared with the same non-garlic diet supplement in 6 control rats. The supplement had no effect on glucose, cholesterol, total protein, albumin, creatinine, urea, uric acid, total bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, malondialdehyde or protein carbonyl levels. However ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) and glutathione (GSH) increased and triglyceride concentrations were reduced. Five percent dietary garlic powder supplementation in rats may have some effect on non-enzymatic antioxidant status and does not appear to induce any adverse effects.
