Abstract

This paper proposes a novel differential equation based fault location algorithm for high voltage DC (HVDC) transmission lines. The fault is located using voltage and current measurements at two terminals of the faulted line during the fault occurrence. This algorithm depends on the low sampling frequency and few numbers of data for fault location. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated through simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC and analysis in MATLAB. The obtained results confirm that the proposed approach is able to accurately locate faults in the HVDC transmission lines and is not susceptible to fault resistance.
