Authors: , Mohammad Ghazanfari , حسین نویدنیا ,Abstract
The present study has been an attempt to find out whether there exists a significant relationship between an EFL teacher’s Big Five personality factors and his/her self-concept as a teacher of English. In addition, the study has attempted to explore if there is any difference between EFL teachers' years of teaching experience, and their self-concept as English teachers. The study has also tried to investigate the difference between males and females with respect to their self-concept. One hundred and twelve teachers participated in this study. They were arbitrarily divided into three groups of “low”, “mid”, and “high” in terms of the years of experience as EFL teachers. The data were obtained by administering The NEO Five-Factor Inventory and Teacher Self-concept Evaluation Scale. The results indicated that self-concept significantly correlated with the four components of the Big-Five personality traits. That is, self-concept correlated with "Neuroticism", "Openness to experience", "Agreeableness" and "Conscientiousness" positively. Moreover, the results of the study indicated that "Extraversion" did not have any significant effect on the participants’ self-concept. The findings further revealed that there was not any statistically significant difference among the three groups of the participants with different years of teaching experience with respect to their self-concept. It was also revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between males and females, in favor of females, with respect to their self-concept.
