Ornamental geophytes (ornamental flower bulbs) are international and national heritage considering their contribution to people's life quality around the world. Iranian habitats support about 8000 species of flowering plants (belonging to 167 families and 100 genera) of which almost 1700 are endemic. Iran is a rich country in terms of distribution of bulbous plants. More than 200 species of bulbous plants from different plant families naturally grow in Iran and play an important role in the colorful display of flowers in the plains, mountains, and forests. Unfortunately, some flower bulbs are at the risk of eradication in Iran due to some factors, including inappropriate herbivory and overgrazing, land use change, illegal bulb and flower harvesting, road construction, mining activities, drought, etc. The genus Fritillaria L. is an enormous genus of monocots with 130 species in the world and 20 species in Iran of which two are endemic. Fritillaria raddeana is an important species of the genus Fritillaria naturally occur in Northeast of Iran (North Khorassan province), Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. This species is important from ornamental and medicinal perspective and due to its unique characteristics, could be used as flowering pot plant, cut flower and landscape plant. Unfortunately, the scientific researches on this species are limited. Considering the narrow distribution of this species in Iran which is restricted to some localities in North Khorassan province, studying of its phenology, adaptability and propagation is the primary steps towards its conservation and commercialization. Its spectacular color (yellow), narrow distribution and more significantly, the risk of gradual extinction were the factors triggered a comprehensive research with three phases. The first phase includes assessing and recording its phenological stages in the habitats and also evaluating the potential threats of its survival. The second phase deals with optimizing sexual and asexual propagation methods for its conservation. In the third phase, its domestication is being evaluated considering the effects of temperature, chilling requirements, planting date, medium type and nutrition.
