Background and Aim:Antibiotic resistance has long been an issue for human populations. Streptomyces is a genius of filamentous bacteria with a great genomic potential for secondary metabolites production and is one of the main sources for antibiotics. Marin Streptomyces are emerging as a new source for novel bioactive products with distinctive chemical and biological characteristics. The aim of this study was to test different carbon and nitrogen sources with different concentrations to find the optimum condition for antibacterial production of Streptomyces sp.ACS116 isolated from Oman Sea. Methods:4 carbon sources including Glucose, Dextrose, Starch and Glycerol and 5 nitrogen sources including Pepton, Trypton, Malt extract, Yeast extract and Soy extract were tested by one factor at the time method and after 7 days of fermentation, the extracts were tested on standard pathogen staphylococcus aureus PTCC 1431 by agar well diffusion method and the inhibition zones were measured. After optimizing the source, different concentrations of the best nitrogen and carbon sources were tested by the same method to find the optimum concentration. Results:The results showed that Dextrin with 2% W/V for carbon source and Pepton with 1.8 % W/V were the optimum condition for antimicrobial production by this strain. Conclusion:The optimum condition increased the antimicrobial production (inhibition zone) by 2 folds. This proves the importance of carbon and nitrogen source on antibiotic production by Streptomyces.
