Authors: Masood Khoshsaligheh , Saeed Ameri ,Abstract
The syllabus of the undergraduate program in English translation in Iranian universities is nearly three-decades old, and has failed to keep up with the recent developments of the field as well as the demands of the current market. Despite recent serious efforts on the part of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology to redesign and improve all the programs including the BA English Translation, a multidimensional survey of the areas of the success and failure of the didactics of audiovisual translation (AVT) as a marginal and dysfunctional module of the outgoing degree program can be of several values and can helpfully feed into a better pedagogic execution of the expertise in the new program. The significance of taking serious measures for AVT pedagogy is easily prompted by the exponential increase in the amount of audiovisual products, including television series, documentaries, animated and feature movies and the rising demand for their access in Persian. To explore this issue empirically and to offer remedy, this research aims at descripting the present AVT training in Iran at the undergraduate level. This preliminary yet triangulated study entails collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data by means of interviews and questionnaires from translation trainers, current and former graduate students of translation in Iranian higher education as well as Iranian AVT professionals. The study also examines the curriculum of the undergraduate AVT course and contrasts it against the specialist AVT courses offered by world level universities. The findings indicate to the unsystematic teaching of AVT, lack of equipment, inadequate competence of the course teachers, among others. Following the discussion of the findings, the authors contend that significant changes in terms of the trainers, the equipment, the policies, the content and volume of the course are essential and crucial.
