Abstract

Objective: The large-scale discharge of dye-contaminated wastewater, particularly Reactive Blue 19 (RB19), poses serious environmental concerns by disrupting aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to evaluate the biosorption efficiency of filamentous fungal biomass, offering a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative for RB19 removal from aqueous solutions. Methods: Strain PK4 was isolated from heavy metal-contaminated soil in Charmshahr, Mashhad. The fungal biomass was obtained by incubating at 28°C for 96 h, followed by centrifugation, freeze-drying, and grinding to a uniform powder. Biosorption experiments were conducted using 2 mg/mL of fungal biomass and 0.02 mg/ml of RB19 in a reaction mixture incubated at 30°C and 150 rpm for 1 h. After incubation, the supernatant was separated by centrifugation, and dye removal efficiency was determined using UV-Visible spectrophotometry at 613 nm. Results: The fungal biomass exhibited 48% dye removal efficiency, demonstrating its potential for textile wastewater treatment. The effectiveness of filamentous fungi in biosorption is attributed to their cell wall composition, biodegradability, and functional groups that facilitate pollutant binding. This study highlights the advantages of using fungal biomasses from contaminated environments as cost-effective and sustainable biosorbents. Further studies are recommended to optimize operational parameters and assess biosorption performance under real-world conditions. Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrated that the filamentous fungal biomass, particularly PK4 strain, exhibits significant efficiency in removing Reactive Blue 19 from aqueous solutions. This approach presents a sustainable, cost-effective, and eco-friendly alternative for the removal of dye pollutants from industrial wastewater.
