Abstract

Objectives: Chicken is the most commonly used animal model in the basic science researches. In physiological research on the chick feeding behavior, the method of Intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of drug and neurotransmitters is more practical method than others.ICV injection started to be done by microcannula many years ago and now it is performed by the bregma point which was determined by previous studies. The Guide cannula was stereotaxically implanted in stereotactic space using the atlas of chick brain. Then, this point and three small holes (for three screws) around it are pierced with a drill. Using the drill in a way that places the hole exactly where desired is an essential skill for most researches. Unfortunately, the use of drill to pierce the places for cannula and tiny screws reduces the surgical accuracy, prolongs the process and increases the mortality during surgery. Materials & Methods: The study aims to replace the drill with a new tool in order to increase the speed and the accuracy of surgery. Hence, here is described two tools that can be used for drilling and discussed techniques found to be effective in the reduction of the accuracy surgery. In the present study, stereotaxic surgery was carried out on 36 male broilers (Ross 308). After the determination of the Bergama point, the exact location of the cannula placement was determined with the stereotactic atlas. In the next step, needle No.21 was used to pierce the location of the cannula. Then the needle was separated from the device. After that, needle No. 16 was used to pierce the placement of tiny screws, and the surgery was performed. Finally, the duration of the surgery as well as the mortality were recorded. Results & Conclusion: The results showed that the use of needle No. 21 for piercing the place of cannula and the use of needle No. 16 to pierce the tiny screws improved the accuracy and the speed of surgery. The duration of the surgery, from fixing the head in the stereotaxic apparatus to completing the surgery and separating the chick from the device, lasted 20 minutes. The number of casualties in this experiment was 6 chicks. As a result of this study, it is suggested to replace the drill with needles No.16 and 21 in stereotaxic surgery.
